Not too long ago, a few friends and I were standing outside a restaurant when someone exclaimed, “Look at the sky!” We all looked up and a picturesque sunset was happening before us. Hues of pink mixed with blue mixed with orange lit up the sky as we stood in wonder over the beauty above us. A masterpiece created by the cosmos-maker himself. When we see Jesus we see God, the maker of heaven and earth. Those moments we have that take our breathe away—the way the summer’s light reflects on the ocean’s surface or the moment we hold hands with a child on their way to school—are moments that reflect Jesus’ workmanship for all things were created “by him and for him”. The early church had to fight many false teachers and their false doctrine. Though they were eloquent and persuasive to the ears of many, Paul had to combat this wrongness again and again. This time, Paul reminded the church where Christianity (and indeed this whole world) originated from: Jesus himself. Jesus’ firstness and supremacy over all as articulated through this poetic passage of Colossians 1:15-20 expresses the divinity of Jesus, and in so doing, displays his authority over all. The beauty around us and the supremacy of Jesus may seem like two distant, unrelated ideas. However, we see one because of the other. The moments of beauty we experience are a reflection of Jesus, the originator of beauty himself. 1. Can you remember a moment of beauty/wonder? When you saw something and it made you see something more than what was in plain sight. 2. Read Colossians 1:15-20 and ponder a verse. How does it become alive for you? 3. Evil and corruptions are present all over our world and is a consequence of the fall. How can you become more aware of Jesus despite that?
