“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10
The word “workmanship” evokes an artistic ring and intentionality of crafting. When a maker creates tools and when it has great workmanship, not only are those tools of the highest quality but also the great work it can produce is reflective of its quality.
Such comparison suits the heart of this passage. Our lives in the hands of our Father have a divine quality. This identity revelation is the basis of the Christian life: that all those in Christ are crafted under divine hands…for a divine purpose. Not only are we made with excellence, but to produce excellence. After all, in God’s plan of redeeming this world, Christians are the central piece of his new creation.
Consider your own life: Do you believe God’s intentional hand has crafted your life? Often times we fail to see our lives through the lens of Ephesians 2:10. And if our self-belief is skewed, our hands will not produce ‘good works’—the kind of work that reflects God’s nature and loving character. Not only are we God’s workmanship, but we graced to produce things with great workmanship!
What ‘good works’ do you believe God’s called you to produce?
How do you think verses 9 and 10 are connected?
What natural gifting has God placed in you? What do you wish you did more of?
What is one way that God’s challenged you to see yourself as recently? Ex. Son, daughter, heir, chosen, adopted, called, destined, divinely crafted.
