“Open your mouth and taste, open your eyes and see how good God is. Blessed are you who run to him.”
Psalm 34:8 (The Message)
Three chicken sandwiches. That’s usually what I want to eat after a good workout. (Anybody else out there can relate? ). It’s science. After we burn so many calories, our body’s first instinct is to replenish what it lost. The longer the exercise, the hungrier we are! The Bible reminds us of a similar truth: hungering after God. Staying hungry for him, his way, and what he wants to do on Earth. Often times, we don’t desire God because we don’t know how to work up an appetite. We rely on other things to sustain us outside of Him, and as a result, those things replace him in our lives.
How do we stay hungry for God? Firstly, remind yourself of your need of him. No matter if we’ve been a Christian for 80 years or 8 minutes, we need God desperately. Find God and connect with Him again. Secondly, exercise what God has given you. Whether that’s your mind, your spiritual gifts, or even your physical body. Exercising what we’ve been given will develop an appetite to receive more from God. Lastly, take some time and fast. Physical hunger can re-orient our spiritual hunger to remind us how desperately we need him to satisfy us. “You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat.” - Matthew 5:6 (The Message)
